University of Otago

The University of Otago Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka Division of Health Sciences is a leading New Zealand provider of undergraduate and postgraduate education and training in health workforce professions and biomedical sciences.  It also leads research in the related medical, public health and biomedical sciences.

The University is constructing a new state-of-the-art building to expand its Christchurch campus, due to be completed in mid-2026. The new building will enable the growth of its world-class health science research and education programmes, and it will provide new opportunities for collaboration with other important partners in Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct.

In partnering with Te Papa Hauora, the University:

  • Enhances and strengthens its activities and contributions in education and training in health workforce professions and biomedical sciences, research and community service.
  • Supports and fosters strong and productive collaborative relationships across tertiary institutions and health provider organisations in Canterbury.
  • Makes a positive contribution to re-building the central area of Christchurch city, adding to the vibrancy and ethos of Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct for the benefit of the wider Canterbury population.

“Te Papa Hauora has brought the partner organisations closer with a common sense of purpose. Importantly, there is a considerable amount of trust between the partners around the table, which can’t help spilling over elsewhere. Given its informal status and making use of limited funding, Te Papa Hauora has had a considerable considerable amount of influence and impact. I think that says a lot about the partners and their joint commitment.”

Professor David Murdoch is a world-renowned infectious diseases researcher  and clinician. He was the Dean of the University of Otago’s Christchurch Health Campus and the University of Otago’s Vice-Chancellor. He is the University’s representative on Te Papa Hauora’s Advisory Council.
