Te Papa Hauora and Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Youth Advisory Council teamed up with Child & Family Psychologist Nicola McDonald to produce the latest installment of the ‘Let’s Talk The Feels’ with a series on grief. Below is the Youth Advisory Council’s description of this latest instalment of their mahi.

‘Let’s Talk The Feels’ focuses on normalising challenging emotions that youth are learning to navigate and providing the language and skills to help youth seek support and overcome these experiences. We created this series because we noticed the majority of mental health and wellbeing resources are aimed at moderate to severe experiences of distress and take a pathologizing approach. So, we wanted to create a resource for youth – by youth that addresses the realities of everyday life before getting to a crisis point.

To make sure it was relevant to youth, our council co-wrote the script with Nicola and took some of our videos to Christ College for a focus group with year ten students. In our latest series Nicola and Jo (our wonderful actor who represents the voice of youth with lived experience) sit down to discuss what grief really is, how grief can be understood, how to look after yourself or someone else when grieving, and where to get help.

You can watch the series of five short videos on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@tewhatuorawaitahayac).
